AC2 has a great diverse skill system. The problem is, it's so diverse you can easily make your character very wimpy on accident or because something that sounded great isn't (yet).
Ask general chat or guildies for advice on spec choices, and in general don't choose a specialization until lvl 20+.
Your base tree (or dabbling in a couple) can serve you well all the way to 50.
More info on classes is located in Character Classes.

I would recommend for just about any class:
Pick a base class, to lead into your specialization class - e.g. Empyrean Missile tree for Mentalist, or Human Melee tree for Defender.

Level 2-15: Learn Mastery (for your spec), level it more than anything else throughout your leveling (on to Grandmaster and Paragon)

Learn a base damage skill - use it when mob vulnerable (flashing yellow)
Learn Heal and Vigor heal (usually in Magic tree, split up on Lugians though)

Return to your base tree, and pick skills that do damage, maybe later getting a buff or 2
Level 15 - learn Grand Master
Level 20 - pick specialization, spend the 5 points to take specialization

- varies by specialization, some classes may be ok at 15, where others should wait until 22-25

Now you will need to decide when it makes sense to un-train some base damage skills for specialization skills. It really varies due to class and playstyle.
Level 30-32 - learn Paragon, if not already trained.
Note: Every 10 points, a skill lower in the tree will raise the skill above it by 1.

e.g. If you raise Mastery to 10, then Grand Mastery will raise by 1 point (if trained).
This bonus maxes out at 5 points at level 50.
